Skincare is a daunting thing. There are thousands of products and so much information out there, it’s hard to know what’s best for your skin. And where do you start?! Find out just how easy it is to put together a simply cruelty-free skincare routine.
Simple Skincare Routine
The must-have basics in any skincare routine are simple: a good cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. If you’re feeling fancy you can add in an exfoliator and/or serums, but for a super simple skincare routine, you only need three products.
A basic morning and night skincare routine may look something like this:
|AM Routine||PM Routine|
|Cleanser||Optional Makeup Remover|
|Moisturizer with SPF||Optional Exfoliation/Serum/Treatment|
People tend to skimp on their cleansers especially if they’re using other treatments or serums but, a good cleanser is essential to your routine. You want to find a gentle cleanser that works with your skin type. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils and can leave your face feeling tight and irritated.
Derma E Anti-Wrinkle Cleanser
This is my current cleanser and by far the best cleanser I’ve used on my skin. It’s a light gel cleanser that lathers up to cleanse skin without stripping it. I have combination-dry skin with occasional breakouts and the glycolic acid in this cleanser has really helped clear up spots and smooth out my skin.
Andalou Naturals Citrus Kombucha Cleansing Gel
This is a great pick for those with oily or acne-prone skin. The Citrus Kombucha cleanser has willow bark to fight breakouts and aloe to soothe irritated skin. It also has a great scent that’s perfect for a pick me up in the morning.
Pacifica Sea Foam Cleanser
Pacifica is an awesome cruelty-free drugstore brand and my favorite products of theirs is their skincare. The Sea Foam cleanser is a great all-in-one that removes makeup, fights aging and gives your skin antioxidants to fight against everyday pollution.
Typically when we think of exfoliants we think of traditional scrubs. Those can be a little too harsh for some skin types and doesn’t always offer the type of exfoliation we’re looking for.
Pixi Glow Tonic
Pixi’s Glow Tonic is a mega-popular exfoliating toner, and for good reason. It uses glycolic acid to gently exfoliate, helping to brighten and smooth the skin’s surface. Target usually has sample sizes you can snag to try out before investing in a large bottle.
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
The Microfoliant is more of a traditional exfoliator. It’s made of a rice-based powder scrubs away dead skin cells but is also packed full of ingredients that soothe and calm skin. I really like this exfoliant but the price tag for the full size is crazy expensive at $57. I suggest grabbing the travel size since you’re not using tons of product each use anyway.
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting BHA
Paula’s Choice BHA is a fan favorite among liquid exfoliant lovers. BHA is the perfect choice for those wanting to fight breakouts while exfoliating since it can get into pores and clean them out. The Skin Perfecting BHA also smooths the skin and helps to even out skin tone.
Wearing SPF during the day (especially if you choose to add in exfoliation or other treatments) is a huge step you shouldn’t skip during your skincare routine.
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen
The Unseen Sunscreen is colorless so you don’t have to worry about the white cast some SPF can give. The consistency is like a silicone primer (like the Smashbox Photo Finish primer) so it’s a great choice if you’re planning on doing your makeup right after your skincare.
Tarte Tarteguard Sunscreen
Tarte’s sunscreen is the perfect mesh of sun and skin care. It moisturizes and brightens while protecting from the sun with SPF 30. This sunscreen is lightweight and works well under makeup.
Mario Badescu Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30
Mario Badescu’s moisturizer with SPF in perfect if you want something lightweight. You get the benefits of a sunscreen and while moisturizing and evening out skin tone.
Makeup Removers (Optional)
If you’re wearing makeup I highly suggest using a makeup remover before your cleanser. Some cleansers are great at cutting through makeup and cleansing the skin, but I really like getting the majority of my makeup off before cleansing.
e.l.f. Hydrating Gel Melt Cleanser
e.l.f.’s Hydrating Gel Melt Cleanser lives up to its name. This melting cleanser cuts through the days makeup without overdrying. My only complaint is the size! If you use a generous amount every time, you’ll run out pretty quickly. That said, I didn’t think I needed to use tons of product to reap the benefits.
Yes to Cucumbers Hypoallergenic Face Wipes
These are my favorite face wipes and the only ones that don’t burn the skin around my eyes. The Yes to Cucumbers face wipes are easy to use on the go or when you want to get through your routine quickly. They work well on eye makeup too!
This isn’t a product, but a cleansing recommendation. Using the oil cleansing method is an awesome way to cut through the days makeup while giving a little extra moisture to your skin. You can use your favorite kind of oil: jojoba (my favorite), almond, coconut, whatever your heart desires. Rub a small palm-full of oil over your face and then wipe off with a warm washcloth.
Moisturizers are a must, even for oily skin types! They help to balance your skin and lock in moisture. Some people use different moisturizers for their morning and night routines, but the ones below can be used anytime.
Josie Maran Argan Oil
I love face oils and Josie Maran’s argan oil is one of my favorites. It’s lightweight and deeply nourishing, perfect for dry or sensitive skin types. This face oil is packed full of anti-aging and line-smoothing ingredients and leaves the skin bouncy and glowy. A little goes a long way! Save some money and the mini size, especially if you’re just wanting to try it out.
Derma E Hydrating Night Cream
Don’t let the name fool you, Derma E’s Hydrating Night Cream is a great pick for any time of the day. It’s a savior when my face is feeling dry and tight. The hyaluronic acid attracts and holds moisture in the skin, helping to fill in fine lines. I like using a little extra at night as an overnight mask for even more moisture.
